Roam vs Daily rentals

Roam vs. daily car rentals: which is right for you?

Daily rentals are built for short trips — a day or two up to a week. Roam was built from the ground up for long-term driving, from a few weeks to a year or more, with a fleet of new and near-new vehicles you can browse in the GTA and Ottawa. Companies like Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, and Avis now offer monthly programs too, but those programs can get expensive once you price in collision and damage coverage.

Reviewed by the Roam team · Last updated April 21, 2026

Short answer

Roam: A car subscription built for month-plus driving. You book once, pick up one dedicated vehicle from our fleet, and the plan runs until you decide to return the car. Maintenance is included. After your first 30 days you can cancel any time with 7 days' notice.

Daily rentals: Traditional rental companies — Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, and Avis — built around the 1-to-7-day trip. Each runs a longer-stay program (Enterprise Month or More, Hertz Monthly, Budget by the Month, Avis Monthly) that you extend every 28 to 30 days. Collision and damage coverage is priced daily, so the cost keeps climbing the longer you keep the car.

If you need a car for less than a week, for an airport pickup, or somewhere Roam doesn't operate yet, a daily rental is the right call. If you need a car for a month or more, a Roam Long-Term plan is typically much cheaper once daily-priced insurance is out of the equation.

Total cost of ownership

The real all-in monthly cost

Daily rental programs have a base rate, usually priced by the day, and then price collision and damage coverage separately. For rentals that extend to 30 days or more, the coverage alone can add a significant amount to your total monthly cost. A Roam Long-Term plan bundles everything together — the vehicle, protection, maintenance, and roadside — into one flat monthly price. On a compact sedan, that usually works out to about half the total cost of an equivalent monthly rental.

  • Monthly vehicle base (compact sedan)

    Roam

    $450–$550 (entry-level Long-Term plan)

  • Insurance (collision)

    Roam

~$250/mo — Standard protection plan (flat monthly)

    Daily rentals

    ~$450–$900/mo — ~$15–$30/day (collision insurance) on a longer rental*

  • HST (Ontario 13%, added at checkout)

    Roam

    ~$91–$104

    Daily rentals

    ~$176–$273

  • Typical all-in monthly cost

    Roam

    ~$791–$904

    Daily rentals

    ~$1,526–$2,373

*Daily collision and damage coverage in Canada typically runs from about $15 per day for basic protection up to about $50 per day for premium tiers, based on published ranges at the major companies. On a monthly program, compact sedans usually rent in the $30 to $40 per day range before any coverage is added. The exact quote you see will depend on the branch, the dates, and the vehicle class.

The honest takeaway

On a compact sedan in Ontario, a monthly rental program typically costs $700 to $1,500 more per month than a Roam Long-Term plan. Three things explain the gap.
  • Collision coverage is priced by the day. At $20 a day, collision coverage adds $600 over a month. At $30 a day it's $900. Roam's protection plan is a flat monthly rate, so the savings grow the longer you keep the car.
  • Monthly programs still charge short-trip prices. The big rental companies discount the daily rate on their monthly programs, but they never drop to true flat-monthly pricing. A compact on a monthly program is usually $30 to $40 per day, compared to about $15 to $18 per day on a Roam entry-level plan.
  • You pay for flexibility you may not need. A daily rental is priced so you can return, switch, or re-rent whenever you want. That flexibility is valuable for a weekend trip and expensive over a month. If you know you'll need the car for 30 days or more, Roam trades that on-the-fly flexibility for a much lower monthly cost — and you can still cancel after the first 30 days with 7 days' notice.

Pricing is illustrative. Daily-rental numbers are based on monthly-program rates visible on competitor sites (Enterprise Month or More, Hertz Monthly, Budget by the Month, Avis Monthly) in Ontario, April 2026, plus published collision-insurance day-rate ranges. Daily-rental rates are dynamic — your specific quote will vary by dates, branch, and vehicle class. For current Roam rates and availability, see our inventory.

Which fits you

When each option is the better choice

When Roam is the better choice

  • You need a car for 30+ days

A Long-Term plan is priced for multi-week driving, and protection is a flat monthly rate. The longer you keep the car, the better the value gets.

  • You want one booking, not a monthly re-sign

Book once and drive until you're done. No re-signing, no reservation extension, and no fresh rate quote every 30 days.

  • You want the same car every day

On Roam, one dedicated car stays with you for the whole plan. You aren't handed whatever the counter has on hand next time.

  • You want a new or near-new vehicle

Roam's fleet is made up of new and near-new models, and every car meets Roam's fleet standards for cleaning, inspection, and maintenance. The big rental companies rotate their fleets through heavy use, and quality varies from branch to branch.

  • You want home or office delivery

Roam offers paid delivery across the Greater Toronto Area and Greater Ottawa Area. Daily rentals almost always require you to show up at a counter.

  • You want an invoice you can expense

Every Roam booking comes with an HST-compliant invoice. Roam For Business adds centralised billing for teams.

  • You're a newcomer to Canada

Roam runs a soft credit check that doesn't affect your credit score or show up on your credit report — useful if you're still building Canadian credit.

When Daily rentals is the better choice

  • You need a car for less than a week

Roam's shortest booking is 7 days. For anything from a day to most of a week, a daily rental is the simpler fit.

  • You're picking up at an airport

If you're landing at Pearson, Billy Bishop, or any other Canadian airport, a counter rental is built for exactly that moment.

  • You need a vehicle class Roam doesn't stock

Cargo vans, box trucks, and one-off pickups are specialties of the daily-rental world — Roam's fleet doesn't cover those.

  • You're renting in a city Roam doesn't serve

Roam operates in the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa today. Outside that footprint, the big rental companies cover every major Canadian market.

  • You want brand loyalty points

Enterprise Plus, Hertz Gold, Budget Fastbreak, and Avis Preferred all reward repeat rentals.

  • Your business has a corporate rental account

If your employer already has negotiated rates and direct billing with a major rental company, that setup is usually cheapest for short trips.

  • You genuinely need full daily flexibility

Return and rebook whenever you want, swap between classes, pay only for the days you actually drive. Roam's monthly rhythm isn't built for that pattern.

Questions

Frequently asked questions: Roam vs. daily rentals

Usually, yes, once you cross the 30-day mark. A compact on a monthly program at Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, or Avis typically comes out to $1,526 to $2,373 per month all-in in Ontario, mostly because collision coverage is priced by the day. Roam's Long-Term plan on a comparable car is about $791 to $904 per month all-in, including HST. Daily rentals were designed for short trips, and even their monthly programs rarely catch up to a plan that was built for the long haul.

Traditional rental companies price collision and damage coverage by the day. At $20 a day that's $600 over a month. At $30 a day it's $900. Premium-tier coverage can approach $1,500 over 30 days. Roam's protection plan is a flat monthly rate, so the savings grow the longer you keep the car.

Yes. Enterprise Month or More, Hertz Monthly, Budget by the Month, and Avis Monthly each support rentals of one to eleven months. The catch is that they're structured as a monthly reservation you keep extending, not a single multi-month booking — so you generally have to update the reservation each month and accept whatever rate applies at that time. A Roam Long-Term plan is one booking that covers the full rental period at the rate you locked in at the start.

A monthly car rental is essentially a daily rental stretched to thirty days. You still pay collision coverage by the day, you still get whatever car the branch has on hand, and you still extend the reservation each month. A car subscription is built for multi-month driving from day one — one flat monthly price, one booking that runs until you return the car, the same dedicated vehicle throughout, and insurance and maintenance bundled into a single invoice. Roam is a subscription (see how it works).

Yes. After your first 30 days, you can return the current car and start a new plan on a different vehicle in the fleet, subject to availability. With a daily rental you generally have to close your current reservation and open a new one, which usually means a different rate and a fresh collision-coverage quote.

Roam's pickup locations are in the GTA and Ottawa, and we offer paid delivery to your home or office. We don't operate counters at the airport itself, so for the arrival leg a traditional rental is usually the simpler choice. Many travellers rent for the travel day and then switch to a Roam Long-Term plan once they've settled in.

Why drivers choose Roam

Skip the rental counter and the daily insurance bill

Daily rentals were never designed for long-term driving. A Roam Long-Term plan puts you in a new or near-new car with month-to-month flexibility, and you can cancel any time after your first 30 days.

Methodology

Methodology, calculations, and sources

We show our work so you can check it. If anything here looks wrong or out of date, let us know and we’ll update it.

How we got the numbers

  1. Monthly-program vehicle base rate (compact, 30 days)

    $30–$40/day × 30=≈ $900–$1,200/mo

Based on Enterprise Month or More, Hertz Monthly, Budget by the Month, and Avis Monthly programs in Ontario. Verify with your specific booking — daily rates are dynamic.

  2. Collision insurance at the daily rate, across 30 days

    $15–$30/day × 30=≈ $450–$900/mo

Published collision damage waiver (CDW) / loss damage waiver (LDW) rates at major Canadian rental companies typically run $15–$40/day. This is the single biggest driver of the monthly cost gap between a daily rental and a Roam Long-Term plan.

  3. HST on vehicle + insurance

    13% × ($900–$1,200 vehicle + $450–$900 insurance)=13% × $1,350–$2,100 ≈ $176–$273/mo

Ontario HST is 13%, applied to the full rental cost.

  4. All-in monthly cost of a monthly rental program

    $900–$1,200 (vehicle) + $450–$900 (insurance) + $176–$273 (HST)=≈ $1,526–$2,373/mo

Compared against a Roam Long-Term plan at ~$791–$904/mo on a comparable vehicle. The gap — roughly $735–$1,580/month — is driven almost entirely by the daily-priced collision insurance.
